Nestled in Nature: The Barn Owl

At Swallowfields, our glampsite is located at the foot of the stunning Malvern Hills an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and we’ve always championed a commitment to enhancing biodiversity around our smallholding. Our journey has involved restoring wildflower meadows, planting new hedgerows, creating ponds, log piles, and nest boxes, creating a link to the wider wildlife corridor.

A Flourishing Ecosystem

The transformation of our landscape has yielded incredible rewards. With the emergence of the new wildflower meadow, we’ve been delighted to witness a rich tapestry of wildlife. Highlights include the distinctive and attractive marbled white butterfly, groups of goldfinches known as a “charm”, resident hares, and even a heron gracing our nature pond. Each sighting is a testament to our efforts, but nothing compares to the magical presence of the Barn Owl.

The Serendipitous Habitat

By allowing our wildflower meadow to remain unmown due to bad weather, we inadvertently created a paradise for Barn Owls. The tufted grass provides an ideal habitat, rich in field voles, which are their primary prey. This has led to a local Barn Owl visiting our glampsite, making their early morning appearances a daily highlight. With their striking white feathers and distinctive heart-shaped faces, these ethereal birds are a sight to behold, especially as they glide gracefully over the meadows at dawn.

One frosty morning, I had the unique opportunity to observe a Barn Owl in action. As I quietly followed him, I witnessed his hunting technique firsthand. He flew low and slow, meticulously scanning the ground before swooping down to catch his prey. It was a truly magical experience when he flew right past me, offering a curious glance. This moment encapsulated the essence of our secluded glampsite, where conservation and guest experiences harmoniously coexist.

Understanding Barn Owl Habitats

After this enchanting encounter, I delved deeper into the world of Barn Owls and their habitats. Historically, humans and Barn Owls have existed together, but their numbers have dwindled in modern times. They thrive in open fields and rough grassland, where their primary food source, field voles, is abundant. By creating rough grassland habitats, we can support these magnificent creatures.

Creating Ideal Conditions

Here are some steps to create a Barn Owl-friendly habitat:

  • Develop patches of rough grassland: Focus on areas with a high population of field voles.
  • Establish a litter layer at least 7 cm deep: Allow grass to grow tall and uncut and it will collapse by the autumn.  Fresh grass will then grow up through it and last year’s growth will have died back to create a “litter layer”, protective layer for small mammals.
  • Maintain distance from roads: Ensure your habitat is more than 1 km away from busy roads to reduce disturbances.

A healthy litter layer not only provides cover for field voles but also supports other small mammals, making it essential for the Barn Owl’s survival. With the right management, rough grassland can support a thriving ecosystem.
